West Virginia is more than its winding hills and beautiful landscapes, there is also a deep connection to food. Food in the mountain state has always been a way of connecting with family and community. And if there's one thing West Virginia knows how to do, it's turn food into a full-on celebration. Here, recipes aren't just meals—they're memories. Across the state food festivals bring those traditions to life with music, laughter, and plates.

Whether you're planning a weekend road trip or just looking for an excuse to eat something amazing, here's a quick guide to West Virginia's most crave-worthy festivals.

The Three Rivers Festival

The Three Rivers Festival brings carnival rides, live music, family-friendly fun, and even fireworks, but locals know the real headliner is the food.

Fairmont isn't shy about its claim to fame as the birthplace of the Pepperoni Roll—and during festival season, it shows. On Saturday they host the Amateur Pepperoni Roll contest, which is judged by the public. This year will be its 16th annual contest, so expect participants to roll out their best versions of the classic—some traditional, some stuffed with cheese, peppers, or a modern twist.

The West Virginia Pickle Fest

Where: WV State Fairgrounds in Fairlea, WV

The Pickle Fest has quickly gained a large following, which drove the festival to make its move to host the annual event at the WV State Fairgrounds just outside of Lewisburg. It is one of the most unique foodie events in the state.

Here you will find pickle-themed everything: fried pickles, pickle burgers, pickle pizza, even pickle beer from Greenbrier Valley Brewing, if you are feeling bold. There are also other street vendors, live entertainment, and even signature pickle contests! This event is perfect family friendly fun for all the pickle people in your life.

Apple Harvest Festival

When the leaves start to turn, Martinsburg comes together to celebrate, with apples! This festival is the perfect fall activity—warm cider, the smell of fresh apple butter, and tables stacked with pies, fritters, and homemade treats.

Beyond the food, you'll find parades, craft vendors, and a strong sense of tradition. It brings together family, community, and volunteerism. The days are filled with food, vendors, crafts, competition, and treasured tradition and festivities.

The Italian Heritage Festival

Clarksburg's Italian Heritage Festival is packed with rich flavors and deep-rooted tradition. Every bite tells a story, with homemade pasta and meatballs to fresh-baked bread and cannolis. It is a weekend to honor the past, present, and continue the celebrations for the future.

This festival celebrates the Italian influence that helped shape the region, from the recipes to the music to the sense of family that fills the streets. A joyous family friendly event with street vendors, contests, and entertainment at every corner.

West Virginia Strawberry Festival

When: May 9–17th, 2026

It all began to honor those farmers that work relentlessly and contribute so much to the local communities. Once was a small gathering to show the appreciation, has now expanded into one of the largest and most anticipated events in WV to date.

Take a moment to smell the berries, and indulge in all that the week long event has to offer. From special strawberry eats to rides and games. This is a West Virginia bucket list festival that is too sweet to miss.

Bonus Stops Worth the Trip

  • Chili Cook-Offs Across the State (Fall & Winter): As temperatures drop, chili takes center stage across West Virginia. From small-town fundraisers to larger competitions, these cook-offs are where locals bring their best-kept recipes—and their competitive spirit.
  • WV Hot Dog Festival (TBA): A celebration of another Appalachian favorite, with creative hot dog toppings, competitions, and plenty of summer energy.
  • Roadkill Cook-Off (September 26th, 2026): Don't let the name scare you—this famous event features wild game dishes and draws curious foodies from all over.

More Than Just a Meal

At their core, West Virginia's food festivals are about more than what's on the plate. They're about community, culture, and the stories behind every recipe. They're where strangers bond over shared tables and where traditions are kept alive—one bite at a time.

So whether you're chasing the perfect Pepperoni Roll, sampling chocolate in the spring, or warming up with chili in the fall, one thing is certain: in West Virginia, food isn't just something you eat—it's something you experience.
